Nothing tarnishes the legal system more than the imprisonment of an innocent person. Whatever the reason a mistaken eyewitness, ineffective attorneys, police mistakes or misconduct or even bad science there are people behind bars or on death row for crimes they did not commit. An investigative team recruited from within the criminal justice system, including a seasoned judge, a skeptical prosecutor and an adversarial defense attorney, explore two murder cases and consider whether our justice system prevailed or failed to protect the innocent in WAS JUSTICE DENIED? , premiering on Tuesday, June 20 at 8 p.m. ET. Viewers meet the WAS JUSTICE DENIED? team Judge Burton Roberts (former Supreme Court Judge, Bronx County, NY), Charles Stone (former state's attorney, Chicago) and Jeralyn Merritt (defense attorney, Denver), as they review the facts surrounding the 1996 conviction of Dale Helmig for the murder of his 55-year-old mother, Norma, who was found floating in the Osage River in Linn, Mo. The second case involves the 1992 conviction of Beverly Monroe for the shooting death of her wealthy, long-time lover, 60-year-old art collector Roger de la Burde in Powhatan, Va. The attorneys travel to the locations of the crimes for intense investigations that include witness accounts, examination of forensic reports and other evidence and discussion of alternate suspects and theories. They also conduct emotional, face-to-face questioning of Monroe and Helmig behind bars. When Stone and Merritt return to the WAS JUSTICE DENIED? headquarters in New York, they present their findings to Roberts and formulate conclusions. The June 20 broadcast premiere will be followed by a 9:30 p.m. ET Internet chat with WAS JUSTICE DENIED? Stone, Merritt and family members of those involved. Viewers can get additional information, including case overviews and background information on the key figures; review court records, evidence photos and forensic reports; and register their own opinion on the cases at the TNT WAS JUSTICE DENIED? Web site. WAS JUSTICE DENIED? was produced for TNT by High Road Productions (Wrestling With Shadows, Never-Endum Referendum). Paul Jay served as director; Michael Betcherman, writer; with Mark McKay, director of photography. Carl H. Lindahl executive-produced for TNT. This TNT special premieres on Tuesday, June 20 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, followed by an encore showing at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT.
