WHATEVER HAPPENED TO MICHEAL RAY?, a true account of the troubled career of one-time NBA prodigy Micheal Ray Richardson and his inspiring attempt to regain control of his life, will premiere on Turner Network Television (TNT) Wednesday, February 16 at 10 p.m. (ET/PT).
The hour-long TNT Original Special, produced by NBA Entertainment, follows the career of the basketball All-Star, as told by those closest to him. Comedian and talk show host Chris Rock narrates the special and offers his own memories of Richardson as the New York Knicks' talented point guard in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Micheal Ray Richardson's talent on the basketball court was awe-inspiring. Plucked from obscurity, Richardson found himself thrust into the harshest of spotlights, playing for the Knicks in New York City where he rocketed to stardom. But before long, his personal life began to unravel due to his excessive lifestyle.
As he struggled to deal with coaching changes and trades, Richardson's recreational drug use became a full-blown addiction, and his career spiraled downward. Multiple suspensions and unsuccessful trips to rehab ultimately resulted in a lifetime ban by the NBA. With his life and basketball career in jeopardy, Richardson made a final, courageous attempt to start over by playing in an overseas league, prompting basketball fans to wonder whatever happened to Micheal Ray.
