A Conversation With Anthony Cistaro, Part Two (Kenneth Irons) April 2001
Q: Last time we talked, you mentioned that you'd done some work on Angel and on Buffy. And that the thing about those shows is that you just expect that in everyday life you'll see a vampire at the next corner. . .
A: It's accepted, right. It's part of the parameters of that world. And this certainly has that. Has it more so in the sense . . .there's a character that only Sara can see for instance. And you know she finds herself sometimes talking to this character who appears sometimes on the street, sometimes in public. . .and anywhere a passerby comes in - "you tell 'em sister!" You know, thinking she's just talking to thin air. Talking to nobody. And (series producers) try to respect that line of reality I think. And in a good way.
Q: Why do you think Irons is having such a hard time controlling Sara?
A: Well, it's because she needs a little more work. And that's good because, again, Don Juan, for instance, always liked the chase. The hunt. And so let's have a lot of that. But the problem is that she is so strong in spirit and so good, that there's a little more work to turn her, you know. But I think in Irons' mind it just makes the victory that much more delicious when it comes, hopefully, for him.
Q: Where did Irons get his knowledge of the Witchblade?
A: Well, one of the things is that we're not really sure how old he is or how long he's been on the trail of this Witchblade. There's sort of a timeless quality to him and so I think the person watching it, the suspicion would be that he's been on the trail a lot longer than anybody else. So his knowledge is both firsthand and secondary. He's looked at all the sources. And yet at the same time. . . .he actually tried it on for a brief, brief moment and that was just enough to give him a lifetime's worth of insight into it. But it just makes him hungry for more.
Q: They're introducing a new character this season (Season 1). What is your relationship with Dominque Boucher?
A: Dominique Boucher? I think that Irons said, 'we passed a pleasant time once.' And that's the way he keeps it. The thing about Irons that I like is he always answers very directly. But it's -- what's that old saying? It's like a bikini. What is revealed is appealing. What is concealed is crucial.
Q: You also mentioned that you had a former protègè for Nottingham? Can you go into a bit about him?
A: Well this other protègè was part of a military program that was --you know Irons has a lot of experience in dealing with arms and also developing technologies for the military. And one of them had to do with drugs that would make better soldiers. And so out of that program in the first episode there is a character named Hector Mobius who was one of the original members of this group. I believe it's called the Black Dragons. And Nottingham also trained in that group as well. So that's the protègè. Terrific actor (Peter Mensah).
Q: Who is the Witchblade watcher?
A: Witchblade watcher. Lazar. That's his name. You will see somebody if you're watching the show every week; you might see somebody who keeps reappearing. And he has a very striking appearance and he shows up in a variety of circumstances and in a variety of settings. And you should definitely have a question on your mind as far as who he is and how this all figures into the story by the final episode.
Q: What is a pretender?
A: A pretender? Somebody who is not a destined wielder of the Blade. The pretender is somebody who may have had the Blade at some point. May have even worn it. Handled the blade. But wasn't a true wielder. I mean, to that extent, Irons himself was probably a pretender. But he's an enlightened pretender who knows enough to go after the destined wielder.
Q: Would Irons discard women as quickly as the Witchblade changes arms?
A: Yes. (LAUGHTER)
Q: Thank you very much.
A: Thanks.
