Gary Sinise's portrayal of Lt. Dan in one of America's most beloved films,
Forrest Gump, won him accolades from critics and audiences. His interpretation
of the war-wounded Vietnam vet earned him nominations for an Academy Award
® and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, as
well as the Best Supporting Actor Award from the National Board of Review
and the Commander's Award from the Disabled American Veterans.
Sinise starred in Ron Howard's blockbuster Apollo 13, portraying
astronaut Ken Mattingly opposite Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton.
In HBO's Truman, Sinise took on the role of Harry Truman and received
a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award. His recent credits include
Ransom, with Mel Gibson, and Albino Alligator, directed by
Kevin Spacey. He currently stars in The Steppenwolf Theatre production of
A Streetcar Named Desire, directed by his GEORGE WALLACE co-star,
Terry Kinney.
In 1974, at the age of 18, Sinise founded The Steppenwolf Theatre Company
in Chicago (with Terry Kinney) and served as artistic director for three
years. His acting credits at Steppenwolf include the role of Tom Joad in
The Grapes of Wrath (earning nominations for a Tony Award and Drama
Desk Award), Balm in Gilead, Of Mice and Men, Streamers, The Caretaker,
The Indian Wants the Bronx, The Collection, Loose Ends, The Fifth of July,
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and True West, which Sinise
also directed and was honored with an Obie Award. He received a Joseph Jefferson
Award as Best Supporting Actor in Marsha Norman's Getting Out at
Chicago's Wisdom Bridge Theatre.
Sinise's other directing credits at Steppenwolf include Tracers, Frank's
Wild Years, The Miss Firecracker Contest, Waiting for the Parade, Action,
Road to Nirvana and Orphans. He received a Joseph Jefferson Award
for his direction of Orphans, which also played off-Broadway and
in London with Albert Finney.
As a director, Sinise has two films to his credit: Of Mice and Men,
which he co-produced and co-starred with John Malkovich; and Miles From
Home, starring Richard Gere, Kevin Anderson and John Malkovich. Both
films were presented in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. He also
directed episodes of Crime Story, thirtysomething and China Beach.
Sinise was the first recipient of the Film in Education Award from the Los
Angeles Film Teachers Association for his work on Of Mice and Men.
Sinise's film acting credits include, A Midnight Clear, Jack
the Bear andThe Quick and the Dead, with Gene Hackman and Sharon
Stone. On television, Sinise starred inThe Stand, the miniseries
based on Stephen King's epic novel and My Name is Bill W.
