The Events that Shaped
an American Legend

over the course of a year, the conflict that had been brewing for decades between the United States and Spain erupts in war and is resolved. The events of the Spanish / American War served to position the United States as a world power with which to be reckoned. The Rough Riders returned from Cuba as heroes, men who would be forever remembered as symbols of American courage and patriotism.

1823 - President James Monroe issues the Monroe Doctrine prohibiting European influence on the Western Hemisphere.

February 15, 1898 -- The U.S.S. Maine explodes in Havana Harbor killing 266 Americans. Spain is blamed for the atrocity.

April 11, 1898 -- President McKinley requests of Congress the power to interfere in Cuban affairs.

April 23, 1898 -- Spain declares war on the United States.

April 25, 1898 -- President McKinley calls for volunteers to supplement the depleted army.

April, 1898 -- Rough Riders are assembled in San Antonio to undergo intensive training.

May 26, 1898 -- United States learns that the Spanish fleet is in Santiago Harbor in Cuba.

June 14, 1898 -- Rough Riders, now in Tampa, embark for Cuba.

June 22 -- Rough Riders arrive near Santiago.

April 1, 1899 -- Treaty of Peace with Spain signed by US
