WR Hearst to Frederic Remington
|
illiam Randolph Hearst (played by George Hamilton) This notorious American publisher,
whose newspaper, The New York Journal often championed the underdog, took
great interest in the Cuban rebellion. But Hearst's sympathetic leanings
were tinged in opportunism. He saw the uprising in Cuba as a means to advance
his own battle with rival publisher, Joseph Pulitzer. Using headlines set
in enormous black letters, colored paper, full-page editorials, illustrations
and provocative cartoons, Hearst succeeded in boosting circulation and
beating his rival, Pulitzer.
- Frederic Remington (played by Nick Chinlund) The famous illustrator, best
known for his famous sculptures and paintings of the American West, was
dispatched to Cuba under Hearst's direction. At Hearst's bidding, he supplied
numerous sketches depicting the Spanish atrocities for the New York Journal.
- Stephen Crane (played by Adam Storke) The American author who achieved
literary success with his novel, The Red Badge of Courage , was contracted
by Joseph Pulitzer to cover the war in Cuba.
