Hi, my name is Ebonie Hinkle. I'm a sophomore at Provine High School. I've been a member of the Reading & Writing Workshop for 1 1/2 years now. I think what I like most about the workshop is being able to teach people my way and noticing that they understand what I'm saying. The workshop has helped me so much with school. With the things I learn here I can go back and include it in the work I do at school. It helps readers get a clear image of what I'm trying to say, so it isn't that hard for them to understand where I'm coming from.

Hello. My name is Erica Anne Hinkle. I am 15 years of age and a sophomore at Provine High School. My math teacher recommended that I go to a Saturday orientation. There I joined the Reading & Writing Workshop. What I like about the Reading & Writing Workshop is that we can express our feelings in different styles of writing and learn about the YPP (Young People's Project) history.

Hi. My name is Renita Hinton, and I am a proud member of the Young Poeple's Project Reading & Writing Workshop where our theme is "Ain't gonna let nobody turn me around." I have only been with the project for a year. I am 18 years old and a graduate of Lanier High School . What I really like about the Reading and Writing Workshop is that it has really helped me in building my vocabulary skill and bettering my poetry skills.

My name is Sammie Lee Myers, Jr. and I am one of the founders of the Young People's Project (YPP), the Algebra Project coordinator and the youth representative for YPP. During the summer of 1995, I along with two other students were trained in Indianola, Mississippi to use the graphing calculator by Leo Edwards so we could teach our peers in Jackson. I later served as an assistant to Omo Moses who came to Mississippi to assist the Algebra Project. I was so excited when Omo suggested that we start our own company. I was ready to be a math literacy worker. I had experience in working with other students and wanted to continue doing it.

I started doing workshops for middle school students during the summer of 1997. The workshops sent me on many trips. During one of these trips I was able to present to some people from Mali, Africa. After we taught them one of our math-related games, they taught me more about my culture and different ways of living. I learned how to say my name in their language-Sambu. During the workshops I also learned that when you speak loudly and clearly people can understand you better. I think the Reading & Writing Workshop is important because it teaches us how to communicate through writing, speaking and acting so that people can understand us.

Hello. My name is Yudieth Smith. I am 18 years old and a senior. I was a student at Lanier High School where Mr. Moses teaches, but I had to move to New York. I am originally from Jamaica. Mr. Moses recommended that I join the Young People's Project, and this is my second year. What I really like about the Reading & Writing Workshop is that I can now express myself in different forms of writing, and I am gradually getting better with my oral communication skills.
