History vs. Fiction: The Campaign against Victorio
For dramatic reasons, some historical events have been modified for the Buffalo Soldiers movie. Below are some facts contrasting the fictionalized story.
- William Christy was a Buffalo Soldier stationed at Ft. Larned, Kansas, not Fort Craig. Christy was killed in an Indian attack about 10 years before the events in Buffalo Soldiers, which took place in 1880.
- Col. Grierson was not wounded in an Indian attack prior to the Rattlesnake Springs incident. He continued on with the H Troop and followed Victorio to Mexico.
- Victorio never confronted the Buffalo Soldiers on the matter of their alliance to the white man.
- Sergeant Major Washington Wyatt and the Buffalo Soldiers did not, in a gesture of solidarity, allow Victorio and his people to escape into Mexico. The Apaches were driven out of the Texas territory by Grierson and the Buffalo Soldiers.
- Nana was captured by the Soldiersbut not until some weeks after Victoria had been killed by the Mexican government.
